Twenty-one days was never a habit study, and sixty-six is a median somebody else earned. The research that replaced both says the number depends on the behaviour - which means you can estimate your own.

Ask how long it takes to build a habit and you get one of two numbers back: twenty-one days, or sixty-six. The first was never a finding about habits at all. The second is a real median from a real study — and the same body of research puts individual results anywhere between four days and three hundred and thirty-five.
That spread reads like a non-answer. It is the useful part. There is no single number because it was never a single question: the answer moves with the behaviour. Learn which levers move it and you can estimate your own instead of borrowing a stranger's.
Twenty-one days came from a plastic surgeon, not a study
Writing on the UCL Research Department of Behavioural Science and Health blog, Benjamin Gardner and Susanne Meisel trace the figure to the preface of Maxwell Maltz's 1960 book Psycho-Cybernetics, which stated that it “usually requires a minimum of about 21 days to effect any perceptible change in a mental image.” Maltz was describing surgical patients getting used to a new face.
The clinical version of the correction appears in Gardner, Lally and Wardle's 2012 paper in the British Journal of General Practice, which reports the myth “appears to have originated from anecdotal evidence of patients who had received plastic surgery treatment and typically adjusted psychologically to their new appearance within 21 days.” Getting used to your own reflection is not the same job as remembering to floss.
What the sixty-six-day study actually measured
Volunteers each picked one everyday behaviour, attached it to a daily cue, and rated how automatic it felt every day for twelve weeks. The 2024 systematic review “Time to Form a Habit” (Healthcare) restates the result precisely: “the median time to reach 95% automaticity was 66 days (range: 18 to 254 days).”
That review pooled every study reporting a formation time and landed on medians of 59 to 66 days, means of 106 to 154, and “substantial individual variability (4–335 days).” The medians cluster tightly. The people do not.

Two behaviours, two completely different clocks
The strongest evidence against a universal number is that somebody finally measured two habits side by side. Buyalskaya and colleagues (PNAS, 2023) applied machine learning to over 12 million observations of gym attendance and over 40 million of hospital hand washing, and concluded that “it typically takes months to form the habit of going to the gym but weeks to develop the habit of handwashing in the hospital.”
Months against weeks, in one paper, from objective records rather than daily self-report. Any advice handing you one number for both is answering a question the data already split in two.
Estimate your own number instead

Read your behaviour across those rows and you get a class, not a countdown.
- Small, daily, fixed cue — the sourced planning figure is about ten weeks. Gardner and colleagues advise telling patients to “expect habit formation (based on daily repetition) to take around 10 weeks.”
- Effortful, two or three times a week — expect months. Judging a gym habit at week ten and calling it a failure is judging it against the wrong study.
- Hung on a cue that moves — no timeline means anything yet. Fix the cue first; the clock has not started.
- Assigned to you, late in the day — plan for the slow end, then change what you can. The hour is usually more negotiable than the task.
A broken streak is not a reset
Which changes what to set up on day one: not a counter, but a cue and a version small enough to survive a bad week.
- Shrink the action until it sits in the fast column of that table. The two-minute version exists to put you on the simple end of the automaticity curve.
- Attach it to something that already happens in the same place every day. A cue that fires reliably is doing more of the work here than motivation is.
- Write it as an if-then. Implementation intentions are the most tested way to name the exact moment that triggers the behaviour.
- Set one review date by class — ten weeks for the small daily version, months for the effortful one — and stop auditing yourself in between.
Two things this evidence cannot tell you
- Your number. Every figure above is a group statistic. That 4–335 day spread is the honest answer to “how long for me”: unknowable in advance, and only legible in hindsight.
- Anything about breaking one. All of the work cited here measures habits being formed through repetition. None of it measured how long it takes to stop an existing habit, so the day counts circulating for quitting something have no support in this literature.

Only by coincidence. The fastest person in that study reached automaticity in 18 days, so 21 sits inside the observed range — but the figure came from a 1960 book about surgical patients, not from habit research.
